Background
A systems integrator was awarded the structured cabling package for a hyperscale data center campus, covering white space fit-out across multiple halls. Work was scheduled hall by hall, with each hall turned over to the operator as it completed rather than at the end of the project.
The Challenge
The integrator needed roughly thirty cabling technicians within weeks and had exhausted its local labor pool on a previous project. Speed alone was not the difficulty. Candidates presenting as cabling technicians ranged from people who had pulled cable under supervision to people who could fusion splice, run an OTDR trace and interpret the result. On a hyperscale site the second group is required, because certification testing is where the schedule is won or lost. Site badging and background clearances added a further constraint, since an unbadged technician cannot be productive regardless of skill.
The Solution
Advastar screened on demonstrated capability rather than title, asking candidates what test equipment they had operated and what they did when a link failed certification. That single question separated the two groups reliably. Badging and background clearance were processed ahead of mobilization rather than on arrival, working from the operator’s requirements list. Because halls were turning over sequentially, we planned demobilization alongside mobilization, phasing technicians off as each hall completed so that the integrator was not carrying idle labor against a fixed-price package.
The Outcome
Twenty-eight technicians were on site within three weeks of the request. Certification testing kept pace with installation across every hall, and no hall turnover was delayed by cabling. Phased demobilization meant the integrator carried no idle billing at the tail of the project, which had been a significant margin leak on its previous campus job.
